Packers release Martellus Bennett, claim he failed to disclose medical condition

Earlier Wednesday, Bennett was ruled out of Sunday's matchup against the Bears with a shoulder injury.

The Green Bay Packers have cut tight end Martellus Bennett with the failure to disclose a medical condition designation, a league source told ESPN's Field Yates.

The veteran tight end made waves last week when he indicated through his Instagram account that he was likely to retire after the 2017 season. At 4-4, Green Bay is in the middle of a playoff race, and if the team thought Bennett could help secure a postseason spot, it probably would not have let him go for a few million dollars in savings.

In free agency, Bennett got a three-year, $21 million contract that included a $6.3 million signing bonus.

Bennett was inactive during the Packers' Monday night loss to Detroit.

Bennett's production in the seven games he did play was modest: 24 catches for 233 yards and no touchdowns.

Asked directly after Monday night's game whether Bennett's shoulder injury happened during that October 31 post-bye practice or before that, McCarthy cryptically answered, "Just everything as far as the medical information being gathered was post-practice Tuesday".

But if another team is looking to sign him off waivers, or once he becomes a free agent after 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, identifying what's ailing him will be just as important as understanding his future plans.

He is the brother of Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.

Considering the Packers lost star QB Aaron Rodgers with a broken collarbone, Bennett wouldn't have been much of an impact player for the team down the stretch anyway.
