Former coach Chip Kelly reportedly turns down interest from Nebraska

Former coach Chip Kelly reportedly turns down interest from Nebraska

Chip Kelly is reportedly set to return to the collegiate ranks for a head coaching job, with two suitors left available for his service.

Florida fired coach Jim McElwain on October 29, the day after the Gators were blown out 42-7 by Georgia. The top target remains Chip Kelly and he appears on the verge of making a decision.

According to long-time Knoxville reporter Jimmy Hyams and Trey Wallace of the Read Optional, John Currie never offered Kelly.

Florida met with Kelly on Sunday, according to the Associated Press, hours after UCLA announced it had fired head coach Jim Mora.

The Los Angeles Times reported Kelly met with a contingent of athletics officials from UCLA as the Bruins look to replace Jim Mora Jr., who was sacked on Sunday.

That seems a bit unusual, but it would help explain why a bunch of Florida players tweeted the exact same reaction on Sunday amid rumors that Kelly had agreed to become the next coach of the Gators.

After leaving Philly, Kelly spent one season as the 49ers coach but again wound up without a job after a compiling a 1-15 record. He went 26-21 over three seasons with the Eagles from 2013 to '15, but owner Jeffrey Lurie fired him late in the 2015 campaign, amid a losing season and speculation of tension in the locker room.

Kelly is of course no stranger to the Pac-12, with a 46-7 record over four seasons at OR (2009-2012) before taking a job in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles.
