Florida Troopers To Step Up Highway Prescence For Thanksgiving Holiday

Mississippians traveling by air or on the road this holiday weekend should be prepared for congested road and airways.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proper seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to serious injury by 50 percent.

"Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds". "Make the plan of how you're going to get home an important part of that event".

As Thanksgiving weekend nears, local law enforcement and safety officials are reminding travelers to be careful on their journeys forward unto turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing. "A seat belt is your best defense against an impaired, speeding or distracted driver".

That's 43 percent more than the five-day holiday in 2015, when 14 people died in crashes. The campaign lasts through Sunday. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night.

Thanksgiving produces a high volume of motor vehicle traffic and the FHP will increase its presence from November 22 through 26.

"Tragically, traffic fatalities are on the rise in Virginia", Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent, said in a statement.

This year, troopers are stationed every 20 miles, compared to every 10 miles last year, because of a decrease in manpower.

Their Thanksgiving wish this year is everyone will realize the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt and driving safely. "We want everyone to arrive alive and enjoy the holiday".

He noted Thanksgiving Eve is typically one of the top days of the year for alcohol consumption.

VDOT's Thanksgiving traffic trends map shows that Tuesday evening and midday Wednesday are among the busiest times on Virginia highways for heading out of the D.C. area. More crashes lead to more fatalities. Two drivers were found in violation along U.S. Highway 501 near the Tanger Outlet within minutes after 12:30 p.m. Monday.
