FDA approves pill with sensor to digitally track medication ingestion

Big news for the health industry: United States regulators have approved a pill that can be digitally tracked through the body using an ingestible sensor and a patch worn by patients.

Before we have all the answers to those questions, Abilify MyCite is expected to hit the market sometime next year, and for better or worse, the seeds of snitch medication will have been planted.

Otsuka said that the pairing of the sensor with the antipsychotic Ability was created to allow patients with schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder or major depressive disorder to better track their daily medication intake and share that with their care team - which they can control through the linked app.

Proteus, along with Abilify creator Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. Doctors and health care providers have to get your permission first to track the data.much like those opt-in vehicle insurance tracking devices customers can get discounts for if they install the device in their cars. A spokesperson told the publication the FDA is planning to hire more staff with "deep understanding" of software development in relation to medical devices, and engage with entrepreneurs on new guidelines.

Each pill is embedded with a sensor that sends a message to a patch that you will wear on your arm. Once ingested, the digital pill sends a wireless signal to the patch, which then transmits information to the app and to a companion web portal.

Here's how the system works: The ingestible sensor inside of the pill is activated by stomach fluids.

Users of the app - including the patient, but also any authorised doctors or family members - can then check in on the patient's ingestion data, keeping direct tabs on the timely swallowing of oral medication in private like never before. The FDA warns that Abilify MyCite should not be used to track drug ingestion "in real-time" or during an emergency, because detection may be missed or delayed. The idea with the Abilify MyCite pill is to help people do not forget to take their meds.

Abilify Mycite's prescribing information notes the ability of the product to improve patient compliance with their treatment regimen has not been shown. FDA said in the clinical trials for Abilify, the most common side effects reported by adults taking Abilify were nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, uncontrollable limb and body movements, anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness.

Experts say the technology could be a useful tool, but it will also change how doctors relate to their patients as they're able to see whether they are following instructions. In Abilify MyCite, skin irritation at the site of the MyCite patch may also occur. However, the medication is geared only for people diagnosed with certain kinds of mental illness. The chronic and severe mental disorder can cause hallucinations, disordered thinking, and delusions, such as hearing voices and believing that other people are reading their minds or spying on them.
