England star investigated over Bancroft headbutt

England star investigated over Bancroft headbutt

Questions first raised after star all-rounder Ben Stokes was taken into police custody for a late-night brawl in Bristol in September.

The wicket-keeper is being investigated by the European Central Bank over claims he aimed a butt at Australia ace Bancroft in Perth.

England's cricket board is investigating an alleged physical altercation between Jonny Bairstow and Cameron Bancroft that occurred in a Perth bar earlier this month.

Crossing paths: Cameron Bancroft works the ball away with Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps.

Fox Sports News reporter Neroli Meadows revealed when the English team were on tour earlier this month there was a "late night incident" at the Avenue Hotel in Perth.

The matter has not been pursued by Bancroft, but Bairstow was given a big send-off by a couple of Australian players when he departed meekly to virtually end England's hopes of posting a competitive target. 'Following an initial conversation with Jonny Bairstow we understand the context and will follow up with England players and management after the Brisbane Test'.

Bancroft, who is from Western Australia, lives in Perth.

The England and Wales Cricket Board says it has spoken to the wicket-keeper over the alleged incident, which happened four weeks ago.

They had arrived in Australia with questions having been raised, including by ex-England opener Michael Vaughan, about their team culture following the barrage of punches thrown by Stokes in the hours after a one-day worldwide against the West Indies in September.

'There has been no report of any incident from the venue, security or police and there was no injury reported, ' said the European Central Bank statement.

Whether the European Central Bank deem the Bairstow episode to be worthy of further action or not, it will inevitably lead to renewed questions about the freedom afforded to England players, particularly in light of the Stokes affair.

England decided against an alcohol curfew for the tour, with head coach Trevor Bayliss saying: "The players sat down and had a chat". We certainly don't want to keep players in their rooms because it is a long tour.

It is understood that Bancroft, who at that stage had not been selected for the Australian team, did not retaliate.
