Delhi pollution: NGT slams govt, SC to hear plea over rising smog

Delhi pollution: NGT slams govt, SC to hear plea over rising smog

The Tribunal will hear the plea tomorrow.

"The original jurisdiction on environment related matters lies with the NGT, so there is no bar in government filing a review petition in the NGT", Agarwal said.

The average Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital on Monday at 8.00 p.m was 449, with PM2.5 at 447 units.

Nikhil Pahwa, an activist and journalist who has written about air pollution, outlined 22 different ideas on Twitter to curb it, adding that the government has always been aware of such measures. "It is hard to say what the outcome of this exercise was", says Saransh Sharma who is a parent of a school-going child at a Delhi government school.

"Despite this, the visionless Arvind Kejriwal government continues to be in a indecisive state", he alleged.

"More than 32 lakh people travel by bikes everyday in Delhi. You have not followed 99 directions and introduced the odd-even scheme", the Bench said. As the NGT is to take up the hearing today, there is no show of the lawyer from the Delhi government's side. The report also says that the capital city needs more than 10,000 buses to meet it's present demand.

"We have filed a review petition demanding exemptions for women drivers and two-wheelers for this year only", Delhi government counsel Tarunvir Singh Khehar told the media here. The government, he added, does not have enough public transport alternatives to accommodate over 6 million two-wheelers.

Speaking to Firstpost regarding the matter, AAP MLA Anil Bajpai said, "We can not compromise on the issue of women's safety". The odd-even rule mandates that the on odd dates, only odd numbered vehicles will ply on the roads while on even dates, only even numbered vehicles will be allowed to ply on Delhi roads.

But, of course, AAP can't risk leaving women out of the exemptions' list - one untoward incident, and it would be doomed. It has been a week that health emergency is declared in Delhi as hazardous smog clouds the region, making it unsafe for the people to breath.

Soon after the order, the government rolled back it's decision to implement the policy and said that the socio-economic costs of enforcing it without exemption will be too high for Delhi to bear.

The National Green Tribunal on Monday lashed out at the UP government and the Noida Authority for not abiding by its order banning construction in the national capital region despite PM10 level being over 900, saying they were making a "mockery of the system". The other measures would mean involvement of neighbouring states and their respective governments.
