Thank your lucky stars! The Orionid meteor shower peaks this weekend

Thank your lucky stars! The Orionid meteor shower peaks this weekend

They're actually debris from the famous Halley's Comet.

The forecast for high school football playoffs and Orionid Meteor Shower gazing will be almost ideal with clear skies and mild temps. "They'll probably be most prolific in the few hours before dawn on October 21".

Deborah Byrd, editor in chief at the astronomy website Earth and Sky, said that while Saturday is the shower's peak, meteors are likely to be firing from Friday morning through early November. Expect to see between 10-30 meteors an hour.

"The Orionids are known to be fast and on the faint side, but can sometimes surprise you with an exceptionally bright meteor that might break up into fragments", Byrd wrote in her blog. The three-day old crescent moon will set early Friday evening, leaving the sky nice and dark for meteor watching Saturday morning.

"If you can fearless the cold, make a plan to stay out between midnight and 3am on Sunday morning to give yourself the best chance, and enjoy the thrill of seeing tiny flecks of Halley's Comet disintegrate at hypersonic speeds above your head".

Those who hope for a sight of Uranus should look for a blue-green body, visible to the naked eye when looking to the skies in the southeast. Although Comet Halley has long since departed our Solar System, the debris left from its trail still remain scattered in Earth's orbital path around the Sun, allowing us to predict when this meteor shower will occur.

There will be clear skies in SC and throughout the eastern USA which will provide excellent viewing conditions.

The Orionids derive their name from there point of origin next to the Orion constellation, which ascends in the east.

The shower produces around 20 meteors per hour, and stargazers are advised to get the best views by getting far away from city lights, which can reduce the number of meteors people can see.

Cloudy skies will be rolling across the USA this weekend.

The meteors will be visible anywhere across the sky from anywhere on Earth - provided you have cloudless skies overhead.
