Russell Westbrook signs 5-year extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder

Russell Westbrook signs 5-year extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder

Mayor Cornett in 2016 declared August 4 "Russell Westbrook Day", after the Oklahoma City Thunder star signed a contract extension to stay with the team.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal. The contract is the biggest in National Basketball Association history.Tack on Westbrook's $28.5 million salary for this season and the total salary is $233 million over six years.

Oklahoma City, however, enjoyed a strong off-season that landed All Stars Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. Oklahoma City is where Westbrook wants to play professional basketball, not Los Angeles. The supermax makes Westbrook the highest paid player in National Basketball Association history, while also netting him the most money per season of any U.S athlete. Keeping Westbrook was crucial to the Thunder's chances of remaining competitive in the Western Conference. Oklahoma City notably starts the 2017-18 regular season on October 19 against the aforementioned Knicks. Last year, he became the first man since Oscar Robertson in 1961-62 to average a triple-double throughout an entire season, made even more impressive considering the slower pace of today's game.

Kevin Durant fled the scene, leaving Westbrook in charge to spark things.

Curry's $201 million deal had been the biggest.

Westbrook's agent, Thad Foucher of Wasserman Media Group, and Thunder general manager Sam Presti finalized the deal Friday afternoon, league sources said.

While Westbrook's future is settled, and George's now lurches to the forefront, Anthony dismissed any talk of what he might be thinking long term. At the same time, I am extraordinarily humbled by this opportunity to once again take on my dream job of covering the National Basketball Association, this time chronicling one of the league's most storied franchises, the Chicago Bulls.

By foregoing free agency, Westbrook is letting his All-Star teammates know that he's committed to building a perennial victor in Oklahoma City.

Westbrook will prove he is worth the large sum of money on the court.
