Rebels storm Indian paramilitary camp in Kashmir; 2 killed

Sources said that JeM members killed on Tuesday were part of an 11-member "Afzal Guru Squad" of Jaishe-Mohammad, which infiltrated into India in two groups on the intervening night of August 16-17.

One BSF jawan was killed and four others including a Jammu and Kashmir policeman were injured in the initial militant attack and subsequent encounter. The state police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indian Army have been asked to be extra vigilant to thwart any terror attack.

Terrorists attacked the camp in the wee hours of Tuesday. One security personnel has been martyred.

"Normal flight operations have resumed and passengers were boarding flights", said Sharad Kumar, director of the airport's operator.

Officials said that besides the inbound traffic of 26 civilian flights a day at the Srinagar airport, the outbound traffic is also an equal number of flights.

The militants targeted the 182nd Battalion camp of the BSF, which is entrusted with the safeguarding of the airport.

Locals residing close to the airport said they had been woken up by the sound of heavy gunfire.

Suicide attackers hit a paramilitary camp in Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials said. "Firing is ongoing", BSF officials were quoted by PTI.

Security forces in large numbers sealed off entire Humhama and road leading to Airport and launched an operation against the militants.

The area also houses training centres of the BSF and the CRPF.

"Two militants have been neutralised and we are searching for the third one", Munir Khan, Kashmir police chief, told Al Jazeera.

This battalion is entrusted with security of runway of the Srinagar airport.

Khan, who heads the police force in the Kashmir Valley, denied that there had been a security breach that led to the attack.
