Houston Texans owner Bob McNair attempts to explain 'inmates' comment

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair attempts to explain 'inmates' comment

Bob McNair, the owner of the Houston Texans and a University of SC alum, apologized late Friday after comments he made during an owner's meeting on the national anthem protests surfaced in an article.

In an ESPN story published Friday, McNair was quoted as telling fellow owners and NFL executives that "we can't have the inmates running the prison", when discussing the impact the players' actions were having on league business concerns.

Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins missed Friday's practice despite not appearing on the injury report or having any visible limitations recently. Players, following the lead of former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick, say they kneel to protest social injustices, particularly against African-Americans.

But Texans players weren't the only ones who were angry. However they decide to protest, the plan will be revealed Sunday, the source said.

That might have also been an attempt to prevent Hopkins and other players from boycotting Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The team held a players-only meeting Saturday to discuss what the statement would look like. "I would never characterise our players or our league that way and I apologise to anyone who was offended by it".

Though McNair issued an apology on Friday, he meant to clear the air with the face-to-face meeting on Saturday.

"I was referring to the relationship between the league office and team owners and how they have been making significant strategic decisions affecting our league without adequate input from ownership over the past few years", McNair said in a news release. "When you come up to speed on the expression, I'll fill you in on the business acumen that you don't have".

"Mr. McNair, you need to do more than apologize", said Congressman Al Green.

McNair said that "we can't have the inmates running the prison", in reference to the league's response to protests about police brutality against people of color.

"It's frustrating, but I don't think it should discourage anybody". You got to continue to feel how you feel. "Hopefully at some point, we'll meet at some kind of middle ground, but it's frustrating, for sure".
