Google Reportedly Developing Its Own Amazon Echo Show Competitor Codenamed 'Manhattan'

Google Reportedly Developing Its Own Amazon Echo Show Competitor Codenamed 'Manhattan'

TechCrunch notes that the search giant was previously working on devices with big screen sizes to take on full-sized televisions, but now, it is focusing on the Google Manhattan device. If you have more than one Echo, Alexa responds intelligently from the Echo you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception).

The low-cost Echo Dot has become the biggest hit in the Echo line so far, with the black model now the second top-selling electronics product on Amazon and the white model in the fifth slot. However, it does not have a display like the newer Echo Show.

Google on Tuesday ended YouTube's support for the Echo Show, forestalling owners of Amazon's LCD-prepared savvy speaker from getting to the most popular video streaming service on the planet, the web-based business goliath affirmed in an announcement issued to The Verge.

The home automation and virtual assistant market continues to heat up after Amazon announced several new devices this week.

Amazon is a leading player in the young smart home market and it likely wants to use all these Echo devices to solidify that position before its competitors can catch up. Unveiled in May, the $229.99 device sports a 7-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

The new device offers much better sound than the original Amazon Echo, thanks to support for Dolby Audio, which means it'll compete more directly with products such as the Sonos Play:1 and even Apple's upcoming HomePod, the latter of which is due out before the holidays.

Although the retailer has never actually disclosed sales figures for its first generation of Echo devices, CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) reports that a huge 15 million devices have been sold to date. The price of the device is yet to be exactly known. Smart home camera support on Fire TV now works on a range of devices from companies including Arlo, Ring, Nest, and August. The device, which may run a version of Android, was expected to be released in mid-2018, but there is pressure to release it as soon as this year, TechCrunch reported. Before Amazon, Google had a similar spat in 2013 when it sent a cease and desist letter to Microsoft complaining about how YouTube was being developed for the Windows Phone, notes GeekWire. Though it seems it will end up getting released in 2018 as it's already the end of 2017 nearly.
