Bulls' Mirotic injured in fight with teammate

Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic suffered a fractured jaw and a concussion after fighting with team mate BobbyPortis in practice, the National Basketball Association reported on its website on Tuesday.

As told by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the two players had been talking trash during a practice scrimmage and got into a shoving match that escalated when Mirotic charged at Portis twice.

Portis and Mirotic were involved in a "serious altercation" at practice on Tuesday that eventually sent Mirotic to the hospital.

On Tuesday evening, a source told K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune that Mirotic is now home with two broken bones in his face and was checked for a possible concussion. He's a competitive kid, but in this instance he made a mistake. Bulls' executive VP John Paxson says Mirotić will be out for four to six weeks, "but needs to clear concussion protocol". He will be able to practice with the team during his suspension. Portis then dropped Mirotic with a punch that floored him for several minutes before he got up.

With Portis suspended and Mirotic out for a while, the Bulls now find themselves remarkably thin at the power forward and center spots to begin the season.

There was already a dearth of talent on this Bulls roster, but now both Portis and Mirotic are out of commission to start the season after this incident. Not that he didn't have his reasons, as Mirotic was a restricted free agent awaiting a contract from elsewhere or the Bulls. He will likely need surgery, according to the team.
