Leishman by five in BMW

Day sliced into that lead with five birdies in a storming back nine.

Leishman then made gains at the eighth, 13th and 18th to extend his advantage to five shots.

The 22-year-old from Spain racked up seven birdies against just one bogey and signed for a 65, tied with Lucas Glover (-10, T12) for best of the day.

It was a feel-good moment in charity, and on the scorecard. Very easy to throw a mediocre round in there.

AUSTRALIAN Marc Leishman raced out of the blocks on his way to a two-stroke lead but several big names were lined up within striking distance after the first round at the BMW Championship outside Chicago yesterday. Leishman now leads the BMW by five.

"It's definitely one of those courses where if you strike it well and roll some good putts you can go really low, as Jason and Marc have shown over the first two rounds".

Joining Rahm at 11 under are six players - including Charley Hoffman, who holed out from the fairway at the fourth and nearly repeated the feat at the 14th, the ball lipping out to deny him an eagle.

American Patrick Cantlay is solo fourth at 10-under after a 65, while Italy's Francesco Molinari sits in fifth place at nine-under following his 65.

It has been a season to forget for McIlroy, who is yet to register a win or a top-three finish on the PGA Tour.

Round two did not fare much better for Rory McIlroy, whose hopes of earning the chance to retain his FedEx Cup title faded further as he languished one under par in joint 50th place.

His round of 69 leaves him 15 off the lead - which is held by Marc Leishman - and in joint 50th place in IL.

Day, seeking his first victory in more than a year, carded a 65 at the Conway Farms Golf Club in IL, benefiting from what he called a "lucky" hole-in-one at the 188-yard par-three 17th hole.

Jordan Spieth bogeyed the final two holes to card a disappointing 70 and remain where he started the day on seven under, but he looks likely to retain his FedExCup lead with No 2 Justin Thomas (-5) and No 3 Dustin Johnson (-1) both below the Open champion on the leaderboard.

Fowler's frustration increased when he bogeyed the 12th after finding a fairway bunker from the tee and, although he finally got a birdie putt to drop at the long 14th, another drive into sand at 16 cost him another shot as he slipped back to 14 under.

"Confidence is high and hopefully I can just ride the wave", Leishman told reporters.

"I've got to come out and play really good golf because he's not making any mistakes".
