Trump holds first talks with Ireland's new prime minister

Tells the new Taoiseach that there were Irish press in the Oval Office for his photo op congratulatory phone call to him.

While there was no specific mention or congratulatory remark on Varadkar being the first gay Prime Minister, the call does represent a positive step forward in Trump's attitudes toward the LGBTQ community and his position with global nations at large.

Mr Trump did however extend to the Taoiseach the traditional invite to the White House for the annual St Patrick's Day celebrations.

Victory in an electoral college system is something Trump understands.

Mr Trump said: "We have so many people from Ireland in this country".

Trump congratulated Varadkar on his "great victory" and said he feels like he knows all the Irish people in America.




The 38-year-old Varadkar is Ireland's youngest prime minister.

"I will not, of course, rescind that invitation", he said, adding that to do so would be "inappropriate" and would create a "diplomatic incident".

Mr Varadkar also said he would "never shirk" from raising issues such as climate change with the US Government and its representatives in Ireland.

Mr. Varadkar said that he will raise issues such as climate change, LGBT rights, and immigrant rights on a future US visit.

No indication has been given as to what the two leaders will talk about this afternoon, or whether a visit will be discussed.
