Spanish state prosecutor accuses Jose Mourinho of tax fraud

Di Maria's deal is similar to the one struck by Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano, who was convicted of tax fraud last year and given a suspended one-year sentence.

The deal comes amid a lengthening list of cases of tax evasion by high-profile players such as Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, whose charges date back to when he coached Real Madrid.

Ronaldo, who is in Russian Federation at the Confederations Cup with Portugal's national soccer team, has played in Spain for Real Madrid since 2009.

The 54-year-old Portuguese, who coached Madrid from 2010 to 2013, has been accused of "two offences against the public treasury", the prosecutor's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

And by guiding United to Europa League success, the English Premier League side - the world's most valuable football club - qualified for next season's Champions League, Europe's premier cup competition. He is set to give evidence at a hearing on 31 July.

A prosecutor said that Mourinho did not declare income from use of his image rights in order to gain an "illicit benefit". Ronaldo via his representatives last week denied any wrongdoing.

The accusations against Ronaldo have caused speculation in Portugal and Spain that he is now considering leaving the country to play elsewhere.

The claim, which dates to a period between 2011 and 2012, alleges that money due from the use of his image rights were steered into 'corporate structures [which] were used by the accused in order to hide revenues'.

The Spanish tax authority claims that between 2011 and 2012 Mourinho did not pay €3.3m (£2.9m) in due taxes.

"From now on it will be the judge in charge of the case who will take the necessary steps to determine the possible responsibilities of Mr Mourinho".

Di Maria, who now plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain, will likely not serve any prison time because sentences of less than two years for first-time offenders are usually suspended in Spain.
