SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Uber CEO may step aside

Uber has hired the law firm of former Attorney General Eric Holder to review policies and recommend changes. The board met Sunday to discuss the recommendations, which reportedly include a suggestion that Uber SVP Emil Michael, a trusted confidant of CEO Travis Kalanick, be asked to leave the company. The meeting, which Uber has not publicised, could be a pivotal moment for the world's most valuable venture-backed private company, which has upended the tightly regulated taxi industry in many countries but has run into legal trouble with a rough-and-tumble approach to local regulations and the way it handles employees and drivers. However, the possibility of Kalanick taking a leave of absence has triggered a leadership crisis within the company.

Since then, more scandals have surfaced, including a report that Uber's former president of business in the Asia Pacific obtained medical records of a woman who had been raped during a ride in India.

Recode's report detailed how Uber was reportedly considering the prospect that the rape claim was concocted by rival Indian ride-sharing company, Ola, as part of a smear campaign. Just two months ago, Uber made a decision to extend its internal investigation into allegations of harassment at work.

In addition to the sexual harassment probes, investors have lambasted the company for having a culture "plagued by disrespect;" a leaked video showed Kalanick berating a driver over fares; Google filed a lawsuit against the ride-hailing company claiming it stole self-driving vehicle technology; a New York Times expose uncovered Uber's secretive Greyball tool meant to thwart authorities in 2014 and a long list of top executives have stepped down.

In addition to firing 20 employees, Uber said Tuesday that it was hiring an Apple marketing executive, Bozoma Saint John, to help improve its tarnished brand.

Uber Technologies Inc. has been making headlines as the transportation company looks to address a range of concerns in relation to the company. Ever since 2009, Kalanick has worked endlessly to make Uber what it is now, a near $70 billion entity.

Holder's recommendations included imposing new controls on company spending, human resources and other areas where executives had wide discretion. The Holder investigation is allegedly much more damning for the company.

Uber's board of directors has been directly linked to the mishandling or suppression of sexual harassment and inequality complaints. While the CEO himself initially told individuals he may need a break following the death of his mother in a boat accident that also sent his father to the hospital, this move could destabilise Uber's leadership hierarchy.
