S. Koreans march to protest United States missile defence system

Around 4,000 people participated in the demonstration, the largest since South Korea and the United States took the decision to deploy the system, known as Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD.

Moon, a center-left politician, who was sworn in last month after a corruption scandal brought down the previous right-wing administration, has been a fierce critic of the way in which the sophisticated defense system has been deployed and has ordered a full investigation.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday observed a test-firing of a new midrange missile the country is developing to cope with growing threats from North Korea. The views expressed in these articles are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect Mint Press News editorial policy.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Moon said only one THAAD launcher was scheduled to be deployed in 2017 here under an agreement with the USA, and the remaining five next year.

"I believe that it must be strong enough to prevent North Korea from making any additional provocations and also to make North Korea realize that they are going down the wrong path".

When asked about frustration in Washington that Moon's administration has not fully deployed a United States antiballistic missile system and instead insists on an environmental impact assessment, the president said getting the assessment done "does not mean that we will postpone or reverse the decision to deploy".

The issue of South Korea's suspension of the THAAD deployment comes against the backdrop of the death of U.S. college student Otto Warmbier shortly after his release from a 17-month captivity by North Korea.

"Resumption of dialogue with North Korea may need to be pursued in close cooperation and consultation with the United States, but South Korea does not need to be allowed by the U.S. to do so", Kwun Hyuk-ki, a Presidency spokesman, told Yonhap News Agency.

"But it's not clear that, even under President Trump, that he will agree to allow you to negotiate with the North Koreans without any preconditions". You want to start a dialogue without any concessions by the North Koreans. "The South Korea-US summit to come next week should be a venue where the review of the THAAD deployment should be assured".

"The president must have been very offended when given the question". "They've also acquired some knowledge of the SM3 because the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is already using it with its Aegis warships, which was probably a consideration", the expert said.

"China provides the most economic assistance to North Korea".
