Presidential Poll: BJP May Announce Candidate June 23

Presidential Poll: BJP May Announce Candidate June 23

The process of filing nominations for the presidential poll began today with six persons filing papers for the July 17 election. The filing of nomination papers will be held till June 28. Scrutiny will follow on June 29 and the last date for withdrawal is July 1.

If the elections are held in case both the NDA and theopposition field their candidates, then the results will beannounced on July 20.

That, however, is unlikely to happen as India readies to elect its 15th President in a few weeks from now with both the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and the Opposition camp looking set to make a fight out of it.

Those who filed nominations on Wednesday include K. Padmarajan from Salem in Tamil Nadu, who has earned the moniker of "Election King" by contesting more than 150 elections. He has previously contested against top political leaders including J. Jayalalithaa, M. Karunanidhi, A.K. Anthony, P.V. Narasimha Rao, K.R. Narayanan, Manmohan Singh (in Rajya Sabha polls) and President Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election.

Leaders of opposition parties held their meeting this afternoon to chalk out their joint strategy and come up with a consensus candidate. The total electoral college of 10 lakh lawmakers will vote for the next President. The term of current President Pranab Mukherjee will come to an end on July 24.

The value of each vote of an MP is 708 but this differs for MLAs from state to state.

Wooing Opposition parties also makes sense for the BJP as political parties can not issue any whip to their legislators for voting in Presidential Elections. For example, each Uttar Pradesh legislator's vote has a value of 208, while the value of votes from their counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh is just 8.

He said the NDA at present had 54 percent of the total votes in its favour and suggested more parties were "ready to cooperate" with the BJP, taking the tally of votes to 65 percent.

BJP President Amit Shah had earlier formed a committee to consult other parties, including the opposition, over the choice of a suitable candidate. So far now, the names doing rounds as possible NDA candidate are Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and UP Governor Ram Naik.
