Petra Kvitova reaches semifinals at Aegon Classic

Petra Kvitova reaches semifinals at Aegon Classic

Ashleigh Barty needed an hour and 49 minutes to take down the 6th seed Garbine Muguruza by 3-6 6-4 6-3 for her second WTA final.

But on Friday was Kvitova's turn to receive the applause, as she revealed that many parts of her incisive grass court game are in working order and that many things may still be possible despite enduring problems with the injured hand.

Benefiting from the injury retirement of Italian Camila Giorgi, Australia's Ashleigh Barty also made it through to the final four of the Wimbledon warm-up, although compatriot Daria Gavrilova wasn't so fortunate, falling to Lucie Safarova in three sets.

"I pulled out of doubles, and I will get a good treatment and I hope I will be ready for tomorrow". "Paris was a bit weird and unusual, and I couldn't play the best over there", she said. Now each are showing fine grass court form leading up to this year's Wimbledon.

"I didn't really get a look in on her serve in the first set and once I knew I was in with a shot it was a little bit of a different story", said Barty.

"I didn't play [for] six months, and I'm just here to play as many matches as I can".

Barty stunned Muguruza 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the second semi-final on the day.

Kvitova, 16th in the world, is looking forward to facing the 21-year-old Barty, ranked No. 77 and advancing to the biggest final of her career.

"It's fantastic to have (Petra) back on the court", Barty said about facing Kvitova.

Safarova saved two match points against third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the first round and three against Gavrilova in a contest so full of entertaining rallies the women received a prolonged standing ovation.

"It was lucky - I had been struggling from the moment I dropped serve", she admitted.

Petra Kvitova may be enjoying a dream comeback after having her playing hand slashed by a home intruder but she insists she is not a contender for Wimbledon.

The tournament's other Grand Slam victor, Muguruza, reached the semifinals for only her third time this year and the first on grass since reaching the final of Wimbledon almost two years ago.

Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova in action against Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova during their semifinal match at the Birmingham Classic tennis tournament at Edgbaston Priory, Birmingham, England. "I like slicing it around on the grass, and I didn't do much wrong".

She then controlled the tiebreak, earning two mini-breaks to lead 5-3 before Safarova reeled off the final four points of the match.

Barty broke Muguruza's serve early in the final set. "She's one of the nicest girls you'll ever meet, not just in the tennis world".
