Murray, Wawrinka to meet 2nd time in French Open semis

Murray, Wawrinka to meet 2nd time in French Open semis

While Nishikori has no recollection about the victory, Murray had no problems remembering the match. Murray was badly in need of inspiration and he was handed it via umpire Carlos Ramos who gave the 2016 runner-up a time violation while serving at 1-1 in the second set.

The world number one was the favourite to claim the title at the US Open last summer after winning Wimbledon and Olympic gold, but came unstuck in a dramatic quarter-final against Nishikori.

Murray, a notoriously slow starter, was sluggish in the early going on Wednesday against the diminutive but aggressive Japanese No. 8 seed, who was looking to employ the same attacking style he used to stun the Scotsman at last year's US Open, reports Efe.

"Stan has played fantastic this tournament so far", said Murray of his next opponent who, at 32, is the oldest man to reach a French Open semi-final since Jimmy Connors in 1985. The Scot set up a semifinal rematch with third seed Wawrinka after beating the Swiss in four sets at the same stage of the tournament a year ago.

There's Murray and Wawrinka on the top half of the bracket.

Murray came out on top in their last meeting in Paris but Wawrinka is not anxious about the result in 2016 and thinks he can get on top of the Scot this year.

"I am grateful I can come out and perform in front of you". "Hopefully I can take advantage of that and find solutions to beat him", said the three-times grand slam champion. "So it was important to stay strong with myself, and I'm happy to get through this match", he said.

It will be the 18th time Murray has played Wawrinka, with the Briton having won both last year's meetings at the French Open and ATP Finals.

"I needed to start putting more pace on my shots, he was dictating all the points in the first set. So I'm sure it's going to be a tough one, but I'll try to enjoy and try to win the match".

Thiem had never beaten Djokovic in five previous matches, but the 23-year-old's game turned into a juggernaut as he dominated to deny the Serb a ninth Paris semifinal.

But Murray, now just two games away from his third different Grand Slam trophy, battled back in his typical, gritty fashion - winning five games in a row to take the second set and level up the match.

"I'm a little bit sore". His 100-2 record includes his only pair of Roland Garros defeats: against Robin Soderling in the 2009 fourth round and Djokovic in the 2015 quarterfinals.
