Modi to visit US; talks with Trump on 26th

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United States later this month to meet President Donald Trump for the first time.

To that extent, Prime Minister Modi's visit could well be largely exploratory - to get to know Trump and where he is taking America.

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders.

The two countries signed a defense framework agreement in 2005, and India is touted as a "major defense partner" by us officials.

The US President had recently withdrawn the US from the landmark Paris climate agreement, saying the climate deal unfairly benefited countries like India and China, and that "India makes its participation contingent on receiving billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid from developed countries". Mr Modi will be on a two-day visit to the United States from June 25, his first there since the Trump administration took office in January and his fifth visit overall to the U.S. since becoming PM in May 2014.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in her annual press meet last week said that PM Modi would raise the issues regarding the USA plans to reduce the number of H-1B visas that are mainly used by Indian IT workers.

Spicer said the two leaders were expected to set forth a "common vision" on expanding the US-India partnership.

Strongly rejecting Trump's contention, India said it signed the Paris deal not under duress or for lure of money but due to its commitment to protect the environment. He said the two leaders will discuss ways to strengthen ties between the two countries and "advancing common priorities".

In making the announcement, the US president said New Delhi had made its participation "contingent on receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid".

Trump is under heightened political pressure because of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and contacts by member of his inner circle with Kremlin-connected figures.

Trump's review of a visa programme under which thousands of skilled Indian workers go to the United States is also a top concern for India.

Trump, on the other hand, has railed against firms moving factories outside the United States and has demanded US companies invest at home as part of his "America First" campaign.
