America's Cup: Team NZ helmsman Peter Burling - We can't stand still

America's Cup: Team NZ helmsman Peter Burling - We can't stand still

Although the USA team have the odds in their favour going into the first races of the 35th America's Cup starting on Saturday, the New Zealand crew may yet take the wind out of their sails.

This America's Cup is a revenge match for New Zealand, who lost in 2013 after seeing an 8-1 lead overturned.

Meanwhile, here is New Zealand cyclor Simon Van Velthooven, who won a bronze medal in the Men's Keirin at London 2012, to explain why light winds equal hard grind for the boat's muscle men.

The teams have a five-day break before racing resumes next Saturday and Sunday.

The two-time defending America's Cup champions are foundering badly against hotshot young helmsman Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand, who are threatening to sail - and cycle - away with the oldest trophy in worldwide sports.

On Thursday, Emirates Team New Zealand posted photos on its Facebook page showing Oracle crewmen carrying bow sections to SoftBank Team Japans base, speculating that Oracle was assembling a backup boat using the Japanese platform.

PETER Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand are cruising in the 35th America's Cup.

This is a rematch of the epic 2013 America's Cup, when Team New Zealand, then skippered by Dean Barker, reached match point at 8-1 before Oracle Team USA won eight straight races to retain the oldest trophy in worldwide sports. While Team NZ have recorded four wins over the weekend, they entered the Cup match on -1 due to a new format quirk.

HAMILTON, Bermuda Jimmy Spithill isnt afraid of a fight.

"I think we're going to see one of the best sporting events of the year here over the next two weekends", said Spithill.

Spithill said his team would have to take a good look at how the day's racing unfolded before they began to address their deficiencies.

Aside from how they sail and who wins the tactical battles, there are other differences that could decide victory, including how they control their wings and foils, the hydraulic systems and the way the work is shared out between the six crew.

The American team is also not considered to be sailing badly, they are simply up against a boat which in conditions so far, is clearly faster and well-sailed.

The 26-year-old Burling is an America's Cup rookie. "Because we know if we stand still these guys will be catching us".

Oracle Team USA's track record of performing when their backs are against the wall and the intervening five days should set up a fascinating showdown to the competition as both teams race to modify their boats and improve performance.

Oracle made an unforced error when its 50-foot catamaran came off its foils early on the downwind second leg.
