American Otto Warmbier, prisoner of North Korea, released after 17 months

American Otto Warmbier, prisoner of North Korea, released after 17 months

"The North Koreans have a lot of explaining to do if he's really been in a coma for months", said Richardson, who has been in regular contact with the Warmbier family.

Joseph Yun, the US special representative to North Korea, had persuaded his boss, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to bless the rare, face-to-face dialogue with senior North Korean Foreign Ministry officials after assuring him that the agenda would focus on the status of four American citizens imprisoned by the Kim regime, according to people familiar with the process.

U.S. college student Otto Warmbier was flown from North Korea to Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, and quickly brought to a hospital.

The three include Kim Dong-chul, a 63-year-old former Fairfax man who was arrested in October 2015, a few months before Warmbier. Tillerson; however, did not discuss Warmbier's medical condition.

An airplane carrying Otto Warmbier, who is from OH, landed in Cincinnati late Tuesday night.

A second person who was involved in early discussions with North Koreans about United States prisoners said Warmbier's family at one point told friends they believed the North had killed their son.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced Tuesday that Warmbier had been freed. "We are so grateful that he will finally be with people who love him". He was released Tuesday, more than 17 months after being detained.

He had not been seen in public since. In 2013, ahead of his first trip, I wrote a tipsheet for Rodman on the vile record of the North Korean regime.

"Well, I'm pretty sure he's pretty much happy with the fact that I'm over here trying to accomplish something that we both need", Rodman said in Beijing when asked if Trump was aware of the trip.

I'm really looking forward to spending time with the wonderful people of North Korea and of course, visiting with the Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un.

It was only in a diplomatic meeting held last week regarding Warmbier and three other American prisoners in North Korea that the truth about his comatose state was revealed. U.S. officials then urged those with the ability to persuade Pyongyang to ratchet up the pressure to get him released, said a source, who is familiar with the government's efforts.

In the past, North Korea has held out until senior USA officials or statesmen came to personally bail out detainees.

He had been on a stopover tour in North Korea, en route to Hong Kong, where he was going to study.

The announcement comes as former National Basketball Association player Dennis Rodman is paying a return visit to North Korea. North Korea accuses Washington and South Korea of sending spies to overthrow its government. A State Department spokesman, Heather Nauert, said on Tuesday, "Dennis Rodman did not have anything to do with the release of Otto Warmbier". Warmbier's family said in a statement that he is in a coma and on his way home.

Warmbier was one of four Americans detained in North Korea.

Apparently the release of Otto Warmbier had nothing to do with Dennis Rodman.

That being the case, and with increasing legalization worldwide, is it possible that PotCoin and North Korea could get together for a little economic subterfuge? A 2009 visit by former President Bill Clinton secured the freedom of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling.

Following the meeting, Yun and two American physicians flew to Pyongyang on a USA plane Monday under orders from President Donald Trump to demand to "see Warmbier immediately, and, 'if he was in bad shape, to demand his immediate release, '" the report cited an unidentified official as saying.

- Tony Kim, who also goes by his Korean name Kim Sang-duk, was detained April 22 at the Pyongyang airport.

North Korea has previously held Americans captive in order to use them as bargaining chips in prospective negotiations.

In April, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor.
