Trump honors fallen soldiers and Gold Star families in Memorial Day speech

Trump concluded the events of the day by honoring the "unknown soldiers" represented by the prestigious tomb on the grounds of the national cemetery. "We only hope that every day we can prove worthy, not only of their sacrifice and service, but of the sacrifice made by their families and loved ones they left behind-special, special people". "We can never replace them".

Though he acknowledged those who died in every war beginning with the Revolutionary War, Trump singled out what he called "a new generation of American patriot" which has defended the United States "from an enemy that uses the murder of innocents to wage war on humanity itself".

Robert Kelly, 29, was killed in a roadside bomb blast in 2010 during a foot patrol in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

After the ceremony, the president visited with families in Section 60 of the cemetery, where most of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried.

The remarks of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman James Dunford, who stood with the president, were also appropriately distinguished and moving.

But Monday's speech was a far different tone for Trump, who urged Gold Star families to take comfort in the acknowledgment and support from a grateful nation.

Trump greeted a few women who told him they had lost their sons. Vice President Mike Pence, who accompanied the president, hugged one of the women.

In his first Memorial Day remarks as president, Trump told the stories of two soldiers who died in Afghanistan, Green Beret Capt. Andrew D. Byers of Colorado Springs and Christopher D. Horton of the Oklahoma National Guard, as Byers' parents and Horton's widow looked on. John Kelly's other son, Johnny, is preparing for his fifth military deployment.

Trump also recognized former US senator and GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole, 93, who suffered lifelong injuries during World War II. A son-in-law, Jake, is a wounded warrior.

Trump first placed a wreath in Arlington at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier a day ahead of his inauguration.

Trump added: "To the entire Kelly family, today, 300 million American hearts are joined together with you".

"Honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to America".

Mr. Trump also recognized Gold Star Families, those whose immediate family members served in the military and lost their lives in combat.

Trump previewed the address Saturday before he flew home from Italy, the final stop on his first trip overseas since taking office. "If we truly want to give meaning to the sacrifice of those who gave all on our behalf, each of us will leave here today determined to find, in some small way, a method of serving our nation and our communities in their honor", he said.
