ICE operation nets 9 arrests in Santa Maria

ICE operation nets 9 arrests in Santa Maria

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office announced on May 25 that it had arrested 188 individuals as part of a push to apprehend criminal aliens and immigration-related fugitives.

A 26-year-old Salvadoran national with a final order of removal arrested May 21 in Azusa who is a registered sex offender based upon his 2014 conviction for having unlawful sex with a minor.

Federal immigration officers arrested almost 200 people in Southern California during an operation that targeted criminals and lasted five days, authorities announced Thursday.

Of the 177 men and 11 women arrested in the six-county operation that ended Wednesday, 169 - or about 90 percent - had prior criminal convictions, officials said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Jennifer Elzea said in an email to Reuters news agency: "ICE is unable to comment on pending litigation".

Those convictions included: three driving-under-the-influence arrests; re-entry after deportation; trespassing; drug trafficking; providing false identification; illegal entry; and escape.

"Those persons will be evaluated on a case by case basis and, when appropriate, arrested by ICE", read a statement released by ICE. Most were from Mexico but other countries of origin included El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Armenia, and Russian Federation.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January making undocumented immigrants with pending criminal cases priorities for deportation, whether they have been found guilty or not.

"His daughter is active-duty military, his son-in-law is active-duty military", Pasquarella said.

While conducting what ICE called "targeted enforcement operations", agents often encounter other people who may be in the country illegally. "He's been a valued member of his family and community for decades and they seem to be going after people for a conviction that's as old as 1992".

The remaining individuals not facing criminal prosecutions will be processed for removal from the country.

The largest increase in arrests during Trump's first 100 days compared to the same period in 2016 occurred in Dallas, which saw an increase of 2,383 arrests.

Cecilia Ramirez, the bilingual coalition coordinator at Latino Service Providers and president of Wisconsin's League of United Latin American Citizens branch, said it's important for people to remember that ICE is looking for criminals, not just regular people.
