Cop who killed Tamir Rice fired for job application omission

Cop who killed Tamir Rice fired for job application omission

In addition the officer who was with Loehmann, Frank Garmback, will be suspended for 10 days because he violated tactical rules relating to how he drove to the scene that day, the city's public safety director and the city's police chief said.

Rice had been playing with what looked like a gun in a park near his home when someone called 911 to report him.

12-year-old Tamar Rice was shot by Loehmann on November 22, 2014, and his death caused an uprising by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Tamir Rice was killed 2 years, 6 months, and 8 days ago.

Rice's mother, Samira Rice, said she is relieved that Loehmann was sacked but believes Garmback should also have been terminated, according to ABC News.

Loehmann shot Tamir less than three seconds after arriving at Cudell Recreation Center.

Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association president Stephen Loomis say the union filed grievances against the disciplinary measures "within five minutes" after they were announced.

It's exhausting to read the many stories of police officers who not only go unpunished for their unjustifiable actions, but seemingly rewarded with "leave with pay". Loehmann had been working for the Cleveland Police Department for eight months when he shot Rice, moments after pulling up beside him at the playground. Rather, Loehmann lost his job on account of his failure to disclose crucial details about his work history.

Both have the right to appeal their respective disciplinary measures and that process could take years. In 2015, a grand jury declined to bring charges against any of the officers involved.

In surveillance video, Loehmann is seen shooting Rice twice within seconds of his arrival, after the boy appears to reach for the replica firearm in his waistband. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said at the time that Rice's death was "an absolute tragedy", but that it was "reasonable" for the officers to believe they were in danger.

Loehmann applied to join Cleveland's police force in 2013 after resigning from the police department in the suburb of Independence, and after failing a written exam while applying for a job with police in Maple Heights.

In recent years, police shootings resulting in the deaths of black men and boys including Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014, and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., in 2016 - neither of which has resulted in criminal charges against the officers involved - have spurred protests across the country and increased public scrutiny of policing practices.
